The Neang Neak ear cuff pays homage to an alluring and symbolic woman. Neang Neak translates to ‘Serpent Princess’ and refers to Queen Soma, the first known prehistoric monarch who purportedly gave birth to the ancient people of Kambuja, and who may have pioneered matriarchal precedence for old Khmer civilizations. Legend has it that an Indian sailor named Kambu arrived, married the serpent princess and founded a dynasty with her. The union was the start of what ultimately became Kampuchea, also known as Cambodia.
